The "Indian Head" Pattern
  • 1. The circles marked (A) should touch the four corners of the screen for the correct size and aspect ratio.
  • 2. The circles marked (A), (B), and (C) are used to check vertical and horizontal linearity.
  • 3. All sections of the grey scale marked (D) should be sharp and distinct. These check contrast and brightness.
  • 4. Focus is checked using the small circles in the center pattern as well as the circles (A) in all four corners.
  • 5. Vertical resolution is checked using the horizontal wedges marked (E).
  • 6. Horizontal resolution is checked using the vertical wedges marked (F). (Note that the last zero is omitted on the calibration numbers near the resolution wedges. Therefore, "20" actually means "200.")
  • 7. Interlacing is checked using the diagonal lines marker. (G).
  • 8. Low frequency phase shift is checked using the heavy horizontal lines marked (H).
  • 9. "Ringing" or damped oscillations are checked by the groups of lines marked (I).
