Back to Schedule List

This is the first radio schedule I've copied for this decade. With the lack of stations and full time schedules it was actually possible to pick up radio stations from far away. In radio terms, this is known as DX-ing.

The newspaper helped out by printing a list of available stations.

In that era, stations were more commonly known by their wavelength rather than frequency in kilocycles. Thus, the newspaper printed each station's wavelength.

In preparing this list for this website I converted the wavelengths into the more familiar frequency.

In answer to your first question: the term "kilocycles" was replaced by "kiloHertz." "Megacycles" became "megaHertz."

(The following is from "See/Hear: An Introduction to Broadcasting" by Lynne S. Gross.)

Heinrich Hertz was a physics professor in Germany during the 1880's. Hertz set out to prove a theory on electromagnetism by James Clark Maxwell, a physics professor at Cambridge University. The 1873 paper titled, "Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism" predicted the existence of radio waves and how they should behave based on his observations of how light waves behave.

Hertz actually generated and transmiited from one end of his laboratory to the other proving Maxwell's theory that variations in electrical current could be projected into space as radio waves similar to light waves.

Hertz wrote the 1888 paper, "Electro-magnetic Waves and their Reflections," served as a basis for the theory of modern radio transmissions.
