KDIN channel 11. This is a very early
ident, probably between '67 and '70. It was the true beginning of Iowa's Fourth
Network, as the state of Iowa established an agency to build a PTV network.
They bought the former KDPS-TV from the Des Moines Public Schools. The tower
was (and still is, with channel 11's batwings now gone) on top of the old
Technical High School building, now referred to as Central Campus. (That tower
is still home to KDPS-FM, world's biggest radio sandbox...5 kw ERP at 280 feet,
programmed mostly by HS students, and it sounds it!) Little bitty KDIN was joined in Feb 1970 by KIIN in Iowa City on Channel 12. About a year later, KDIN left the tower on top of the school building to join WHO-TV 13 with a diplexed arrangement on a 2000 foot tower. What is now Iowa Public Television now has 8 stations and several translators covering the state. |
