Five stations in Phoenix, four in Tucson (pronounced Too-san...san as in sauna), and two stations in Yuma.
Channel 8 in Phoenix and channel 6 in Tucson were actually NET affiliates, not PBS. PBS did not exist until the late sixties, or early seventies.
Also, channel 5 carried the short lived United Network. Their only program, "The Las Vegas Show," starring Bill Dana (of Jose Jimenez fame), lasted only one month. Not all affiliates carried the late night show live which was supposed to be competition for the "Tonight Show." Channel five delayed the broadcast till midnight, and the Indianapolis affiliate delayed the show two days and played it at 1:15 a.m.
Originally conceived as the Overmyer Network, the money ran out because of the high costs of network lines. They had to buy eight hours of network time daily and only filled the two late night hours. Even with the infusion of money and the change in name prior to going on the air the network had a short life span.
